The Average Ethereum ETF Buyer Is Down 28%—What Happens Next?

Ethereum ETF holders are facing significant losses, with the average cost basis for these funds sitting around $3,200—a level that could act as a resistance ceiling during rallies. The current price of ETH at $2,296 is 28% lower than this average, reflecting a similar loss for ETF investors.

Over the past 30 days, ETH has dropped by 16%, leading to substantial outflows from Ethereum ETFs. On November 2, a $140 million outflow was recorded, primarily from the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (NASDAQ: ETHA), with nearly all of it being $138 million.

When do ETF holders break even?

The average cost basis provides insights into potential selling points. Holders at a loss might sell during price rallies, with $3,200 potentially acting as a resistance level. However, those deep in the red might sell out first, leaving fewer sellers if ETH drops further.

ETF Market Share and Control

As of November 2, Ethereum ETFs held approximately $13.2 billion in net assets, representing around 5.86 million ETH, which is about 4.8% of the total Ethereum in circulation (122.2 million ETH).

Varied Losses Among Buyers

Not all ETF buyers are experiencing equal losses. Some who purchased at the all-time high of $4,946 in August 2025 have seen their investments drop by more than half. In contrast, buyers near the low of $1,566 on June 25 are in profit. Additionally, late 2025 ETHA buyers have faced greater losses, with a 41.1% drop over the past year.

Investor Behavior and Outflows

Despite the overall decline, many investors remain committed. Ethereum ETF net assets decreased from $17.7 billion on October 5 to $13.2 billion on November 2, a drop of $4.5 billion. Net outflows during this period totaled about $1.65 billion, with price drops accounting for most of the reduction and withdrawals contributing to the rest.

ETHA, holding approximately 51% of total U.S. Ethereum ETF assets, has seen concentrated outflows. On November 2, it traded $405 million in shares, which is nearly three times the actual outflow.

Potential Impact of Large Outflows

If 10% of Ethereum ETF assets exit—approximately $1.32 billion or 586,000 ETH—it would represent a substantial outflow. For context, the largest single-day outflow in the past month was $201.9 million on October 6.

This potential exit could put pressure on key price levels:

  • ETH's recent 30-day low: $2,243 (October 30)
  • Immediate support: $2,234
  • 200-day moving average
