Cross River Bank Moves Loans to Arbitrum: Benefits for ARB and Ethereum?

Cross River Bank has partnered with Offchain Labs, the creator of Arbitrum (ARB), to integrate tokenization into its lending services, tokenizing loans on a blockchain backed by Ethereum (ETH). This move raises the question of which blockchain will benefit more from this initiative.

Based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, Cross River is an FDIC-insured bank providing financial services to fintech companies. Their operations run on Arbitrum One, a layer-2 network, using wallets developed by ZeroDev. While Cross River claims this partnership opens access to "new pools of global capital," they have not disclosed specific details regarding loan amounts or fee structures.

Market Reaction and Loan Sales

The market reaction to this announcement has been relatively muted, with ARB trading at $0.16, up only 0.4% in the past 24 hours, while ETH is trading at $2,296, up 1.4% in the same period.

Cross River's Lending Activities and Tokenization

Cross River typically generates revenue by acting as a bank behind various fintech lenders and payment apps, offering services like marketplace lending, card issuing, and real estate and small business loans. The new tokenization initiative allows for the creation of a token for each loan, enabling seamless trading on blockchain platforms.

The next step is expected to be securitization, where loans are bundled into bonds for investors. Cross River's technology can now be applied to lending, credit products, and streamlined securitization using smart contracts.

ARB's Role in the Deal

A crucial detail remains unclear: how buyers will acquire loan tokens. Cross River has not specified a currency for transactions, but if conducted with a dollar-pegged stablecoin like USDC (USDC), the primary impact would be an increase in dollar transactions on Arbitrum One. Cross River's documentation indicates that stablecoins handle only on-chain settlement, leaving ARB without a clear function.

ARB serves as a governance token, allowing holders to vote on network upgrades and treasury allocations. However, this structure exposes token holders to dilution risk as the DAO can mint new ARB tokens at up to 2% of the total supply.
