ENS operates as a distributed, open, and extensible naming system on the Ethereum blockchain. Its role is to map human-readable names, like 'alice.eth', to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, cryptocurrency addresses, content hashes, and metadata. ENS supports both 'forward' and 'reverse' resolution, allowing for the association of metadata with Ethereum addresses.
While sharing similarities with the DNS (Domain Name System) used on the internet, ENS differs significantly in its architecture due to the capabilities offered by the Ethereum blockchain. ENS uses a hierarchical structure of dot-separated names, called domains, where registrars, smart contracts, own top-level domains like .eth and .test. Anyone can obtain a domain by following the rules set by these registrar contracts.
