Ethereum blobs, created by the EIP-4844 activated on March 13, 2024, are designed to be accessible for a guaranteed period of 4,096 epochs, approximately 18 days. However, after this period, nothing obliges nodes to keep the blobs.
The Blobscan archive revealed that the first blob, published on the aforementioned date, is still accessible after more than two years. It was stored in three locations: Google, WeaveVM, and IPFS.
Key Takeaways:
- 18 Days: The minimum period a blob remains guaranteed.
- 128 KiB: The raw size of a blob, composed of 4,096 elements of 32 bytes.
- Blobs vs. Calldata: Since Dencun (March 2024), blobs are carried by type 3 transactions, replacing the previous "calldata" method.
- Blob Market: Blobs have their own fee market, influenced by demand.
- Archiving: Long-term access to blobs relies on archiving services.
