What is Ethereum?

Ethereum ranks as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, with a current valuation of around $233 billion. It trails Bitcoin’s roughly $1.33 trillion market cap but surpasses Tether at $183 billion.

Here’s what sets Ethereum apart:

  • Decentralized computing platform: Users can build and run applications on it without any oversight from a company or bank.
  • Blockchain network: Apps are created on Ethereum’s network to do things like borrow, lend, invest, trade, and more.
  • Token ETH: Used as the currency for carrying out these activities.

Ethereum Price History

Ethereum’s initial coin offering (ICO) debuted in 2014 for just 31 cents per share. Since then, its value has increased by over 60,000%.

From 2020 to 2025, Ethereum climbed by a respectable 46%. However, it has experienced significant volatility, hitting nearly $5,000 at its peak in August 2025. This makes its earlier growth seem almost insignificant.

ETH has seen gains exceeding 80%, losses surpassing 60%, and everything in between. Early 2026 brought a sharp decline in Ethereum’s value due to several factors, including a potential recession.
