What is Ethereum?
Ethereum holds the number two spot among cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, currently valued at around $233 billion. While significantly behind Bitcoin's roughly $1.33 trillion market cap, it surpasses the third-largest option, Tether, by $50 billion.
Unlike other cryptocurrencies, Ethereum isn't just digital money; it functions as a decentralized computing platform. Users can develop and operate applications on its blockchain network without any company or bank involvement. The token ETH serves as the currency for these transactions.
Ethereum Price History
Ethereum's initial coin offering (ICO) launched in 2014 at just 31 cents per share. Since then, its value has surged by over 60,000%. Over the past five years (2020-2025), Ethereum gained a respectable 46%. However, its price has been subject to extreme volatility, reaching nearly $5,000 at its peak in August 2025 - a 1.6 million percent increase from its ICO.
In early 2026, Ethereum experienced a sharp downturn due to recession concerns and significant sales by co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
Ethereum vs. Bitcoin
Following Bitcoin, Ethereum occupies the second spot in the cryptocurrency rankings. While Ethereum wasn't initially designed as a currency, its primary purpose was to establish a decentralized computing platform.
