Starknet Opens Vote on Leaving Ethereum to Become a Post-Quantum L1
STRK holders have seven days to vote on whether Starknet should explore leaving Ethereum to run as an independent post-quantum layer 1. The poll closes October 22.
Key Points:
- A "Yes" vote initiates research, leading to more detailed proposals and further polls, but does not authorize a transition.
- A "No" vote maintains Starknet's current L2 path.
- "Neutral" keeps the discussion open until more information is available.
- No timeline for a transition has been published.
Starknet's current status:
- A permissionless validity rollup designed to scale Ethereum while retaining its security and decentralization.
- Its proving layer is already post-quantum-ready, utilizing STARKs based on collision-resistant hash functions.
Challenges:
- The bridge's messaging layer and blob data availability, anchored by a KZG commitment, are dependent on Ethereum's migration.
- Removing secp syscalls, estimated to take about a month after Ethereum's migration, would require governance approval.
What a new chain would look like is still undefined. No final designs for consensus, data availability, bridging, or migration have been published.
STRK Token:
- The token remains the same.
- Bridges from Ethereum to Starknet will remain open.
- Voting weight is held by stakers and delegators.
