Keep Calm and Enter 'Bunker Mode,' Crypto Bros Say

By Truman Dickerson

Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin recently advised that crypto wallets need to become more secure in light of advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), specifically AI-accelerated mathematical breakthroughs.

The Crypto-Clutching Begins

The call for "bunker mode" originated from Justin Drake, a researcher at Ethereum, who shared his concerns on X (formerly Twitter) about the potential risks posed by OpenAI's recent achievements in solving complex mathematical problems.

Drake suggested that hackers might exploit these advancements to derive private keys from public keys of blockchain wallets, which are typically protected by intricate mathematical computation.

"Yesterday's OpenAI drop made it clear that mathematical superintelligence is upon us," Drake stated. "Today I call upon the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning for 'bunker mode.'"

A More Cautious Approach

While Drake urged immediate action, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin took a more measured stance on X. He advised against panicking and scrambling to move funds to new wallets. Instead, he emphasized the need for the industry to enhance encryption methods for private keys.

"We should take the risks to cryptography from AI-accelerated math seriously," Buterin wrote.

Bitcoin transactions, like those of other cryptocurrencies, are secured through cryptography, a coding system that uses public and private keys to protect transactions and control access to cryptocurrency.

According to a Wall Street analyst, it would take supercomputers "trillions of years" to derive a private key from a public one, given the complexity of the computations involved. However, Drake suggested that AI could potentially speed up this process.
